For a woman as eccentric as Helena Bonham Carter, she is remarkably measured. Unlike so many stars in Hollywood, Helena doesn't let herself get caught up in the needless drama. Nor does she take big bold stands like many celebrities as she clearly likes to see as many sides of an argument as humanely possible. So, it makes sense that journalists would ask her to clarify various things she's said about the #MeToo movement and her relationship with her longtime collaborator Johnny Depp.

Of course, , mostly while working with her ex-partner director Tim Burton. But all of their time working together has proved that Helena and Johnny are fairly close. So, naturally, journalists have asked her to be a character witness as well as state her feelings about . As soon as the Johnny Depp allegations first started coming to light, Helena Bonham Carter was asked if her relationship with Johnny has been affected., her response was, "No. Johnny is still a friend. He’s the godfather to my children. I haven’t seen him for a long time. But he’s quite an elusive character."

While Helena and Tim Burton didn't get married, they did have a very long-lasting relationship that gifted them a couple of kids. And these kids, according to Helena, have Captain Jack Sparrow as their godfather. This is because Johnny and Tim are exceptionally close... hence the fact they've made eight films together. Not only has Helena been in more than half of them, but she's clearly spent some time with Johnny personally. Although, Johnny's relationship was really with her ex. that tabloids started to believe they were romantically involved. This is something Helena has disputed numerous times.

And that means Helena has been forced to address it more than once...

"There’s something quite old-fashioned about Johnny, with these manners – none of it makes sense. But the man’s not stupid. He wouldn’t have gone to this length if he thought he was in the wrong," Helena said to in October 2020 after Johnny went after The Sun for libel.

While Helena Bonham Carter has almost definitely been fair and somewhat supportive of Johnny's current battle to clear this name, she has;t outright stated that she supports him. To some, it would appear as though she is playing it safe, simultaneously defending her friend while leaving it open for him to be prosecuted if he's guilty. But the reason she's doing this is because of her calm and measured approach to everything. As evidenced in her response to the Harvey Weinstein verdict, Helena claims she likes to see the multiplicity of identities within each individual.

"I never see anything in black and white," she said in 2020. "I believe people are multicolored, they’re almost never all good or all bad."

In response to the heinous things that Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of, Helena said, "Weinstein was a bully, full stop. But also, not full stop, really. He was a bully, possible sociopath, and fantastically effective producer of films."

The Crown actor is a breath of fresh air in a world where people are approaching people and ideas as if they are wholly good or wholly bad. But Helena does appear to have a lot more respect for Johnny than other men who have been outed in the #MeToo movement. Not only is this due to the long, creative, and friendly history they've had together, but it's also clearly because Helena feels she knows the man who is being accused on some truly awful things. In her perspective, it doesn't make sense. But she is certainly open to the possibility that more than one thing can be true at once.
